Wollongong Hospital's Battle Against Nature's Fury: Pigeons, Mold, and Wet Weather Woes
Nature strikes again, wreaking havoc on healthcare facilities. Recent severe weather and relentless downpours have exposed a series of health and safety concerns at Wollongong Hospital, including unwelcome avian guests and pervasive mold infestations.
The hospital's woes began with the older persons' mental health unit, which had become a temporary home for pigeons and their lice. But the problems didn't stop there. Mold was discovered in the intensive care unit, sprinklers, ceilings, and bathrooms, while water found its way into an elevator.
And Shellharbour Hospital wasn't spared either. Ceiling tiles collapsed under the weight of the heavy rain. But here's where it gets controversial—while Bulli and Coledale hospitals seemed to have escaped unscathed, was it luck or well-maintained infrastructure?
The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District spokesperson attributed all these issues to the relentless wet weather. She explained that the birds found their way into the older persons' unit due to roof damage caused by the severe weather. A challenging clean-up operation ensued, with pest control experts embarking on a complex remediation project in December 2025, which included repairing an area 50 meters off the ground, leading to road closures and safety measures involving the NSW Police.
The spokesperson assured that patient care wasn't compromised during this time. Additional bird-proofing measures, such as netting, have since been installed.
The hospital's troubles extended to the intensive care unit and specialized inpatient units, where water leaks and mold were discovered and subsequently repaired. The LHD spokesperson confirmed that all issues have now been addressed.
