Patchouli oil, a scent that divides opinions, has been found to possess an unexpected ability to ward off mosquitoes. This discovery, made by a team of chemists in the Brazilian Amazon, challenges the conventional association of patchouli with incense and candles. The study, published in the journal ACS Omega, introduces a patchouli cream that effectively repels Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the culprits behind dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. This finding is particularly significant as it offers a natural alternative to DEET, a synthetic repellent that can cause skin irritation and has been linked to neurological effects in lab studies.
The team, led by Lizandra Lima Santos from the Federal University of Amapá, characterized patchouli oil from plants grown near Macapá, identifying 16 compounds, with patchouli alcohol comprising approximately 40%. Two other compounds, alpha-guaiene and beta-elemene, proved to be the key players in the repellent's effectiveness. The oil was dissolved into a standard cream base at a concentration of 200 parts per million, ensuring stability for 90 days across various storage temperatures.
In a mosquito cage experiment, volunteers coated one forearm with patchouli cream and another with commercial DEET. The results were striking: for three hours, no mosquito fed on the patchouli-treated arm, while the DEET-treated arm and the bare arm were bitten. This finding is notable because it demonstrates that patchouli can provide complete protection against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes for an extended period, even at a relatively low concentration.
The study's computer simulation revealed that alpha-guaiene and beta-elemene fit snugly into the same protein that DEET targets, suggesting that patchouli may repel mosquitoes by working through the same channel as DEET. This is a significant breakthrough, as it implies that plant-based repellents can match the performance of synthetic compounds without the need for higher doses.
However, the study also highlights areas for further research. The team acknowledges the risk of skin irritation associated with some patchouli oil components, and the need for outdoor trials and formal clinical testing in humans. Despite these considerations, the findings present a promising natural alternative to DEET, particularly for pediatricians and public health programs in dengue-endemic regions.
