Space debris in the geostationary orbit, a region of space at 22,000 miles above Earth, poses a significant threat to satellites and their costly operations. This region, crucial for TV broadcasting, internet delivery, Earth observation, and weather monitoring, is now being identified as a potential minefield. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Warwick, uncovered 25 previously unseen debris tracks, 80% of which were caused by unknown objects. The issue is exacerbated by the near-non-existent atmosphere at this altitude, which prevents debris from burning up in the atmosphere. As a result, small objects tend to be incredibly faint and difficult to detect, and any debris generated will stick around indefinitely. This is particularly concerning for satellites in this region, which are often very large and expensive, designed for longer missions than those in low Earth orbit. These satellites, frequently fitted with large solar panels, can suffer substantial damage from even the tiniest piece of junk. The researchers are now looking to analyze additional images obtained by other telescopes to get a fuller understanding of the scale of the debris contamination in the region. This discovery highlights the need for adequate debris surveys before launching satellites into the geostationary orbit to ensure their safety and the sustainability of space operations.
