The three finalists, Dr. Mark C. Fields, Dr. Thad Russell, and Dr. David Williams, each offer a distinct perspective shaped by their backgrounds and careers. From rural community colleges to urban campuses, and from law enforcement to the arts, these candidates have walked diverse paths that will undoubtedly inform their leadership styles.
Dr. Mark C. Fields: A Student-Centric Leader
Dr. Fields' journey from the California Highway Patrol to higher education is a testament to his commitment to public service. As a proud community college graduate himself, he understands the transformative power of education and the unique needs of students balancing work and family responsibilities. His experience within the California Community College System positions him well to advocate for the college's students and staff.
Dr. Thad Russell: A Believer in Community Collaboration
Dr. Russell's philosophy centers on the idea that community colleges thrive when they work in harmony with the communities they serve. His experience as Vice President of Instruction at Porterville College has given him a deep understanding of the role community colleges play in workforce development and community strengthening. As a first-generation college graduate who worked full time while raising a family, he brings a unique perspective and a personal connection to the challenges many students face.
Dr. David Williams: An Advocate for Equity and Access
Dr. Williams' work at Solano Community College has focused on breaking down systemic barriers to student success. As the first DEIA Advocate for the CCCCIO Association, he has been instrumental in promoting equitable teaching practices and diversifying hiring. His experience as a professor and administrator at various institutions, including Texas Tech University and UC Berkeley, provides him with a broad perspective on higher education.
